Lighting, inside and out
Recessed cans, chandeliers and high fixtures, LED conversions, and the outdoor and security lighting that has to survive a Texas summer on the south side of a house.
Chapter 01
Recessed lighting in a ceiling that already exists
Putting cans into a finished ceiling is mostly a planning job. Joist direction and spacing, where the HVAC trunk and any plumbing runs sit, and how far the beam spread has to travel to land evenly on a work surface rather than on the back of whoever is standing at it.
We lay the pattern out against the room's actual use before anything is cut, because a grid that looks correct on a ceiling plan can put every fixture behind the person using the counter. Attic access does a lot of the work in single storey houses here, which keeps the number of openings down.
Trims and colour temperature get chosen together. Mixing colour temperatures within one sightline is the single most common thing that makes a good lighting job read as a bad one.

Chandeliers, fans and anything heavy overhead
The question with a heavy fixture is never the wiring, it is what the box is fastened to. A standard device box is not rated to carry a chandelier or a fan, and a fan on an unrated box is a vibration problem that gets worse for years before it becomes an obvious one.
So the work is a fan or fixture rated box, braced to structure, and then the fixture. Where a two storey entry or a stairwell puts the fixture out of ladder reach, that changes the access equipment and we price it honestly rather than discovering it on the day.
The shop on Highland Drive also takes lamps and light fixtures for repair by appointment, which is often the better answer for a fitting that cannot simply be replaced.
Chapter 03
LED conversions that are worth doing
Most LED retrofit disappointment traces to one of three things: a driver that is not compatible with the existing dimmer, a colour temperature chosen from a box rather than from the room, or a fitting that traps heat around a driver that needed to shed it.
We match the dimmer to the driver rather than assuming the old one will do, and we keep colour temperature consistent across a sightline. Where a fluorescent fitting is being converted rather than replaced, the ballast comes out properly instead of being left in circuit.
Where the honest answer is that the existing lamps are fine and the money is better spent elsewhere in the house, we will say that too.
Outdoor and security lighting
Exterior work has to be built for weather and for the sun. That means fittings and boxes rated for wet locations, in use covers on exterior receptacles, and ground fault protection on the circuits that feed them.
For security lighting the useful question is coverage and glare rather than raw output. A fixture aimed to flood a driveway from the wrong height mostly blinds whoever is walking up it and puts everything behind the light into deeper shadow. Placement is most of the result.
